May 5, 2007Lyndon B. Johnson SP&HSSoap Making at the Sauer-Beckmann Farm — Come see how lye soap is made, how it was used in the 1900s and why it was important to a farm family. See park interpreters cook a batch of lye soap over an open fire and watch what happens to the combination of lye, lard and water as it turns into soap. You can also touch, feel, smell and experience using lye soap to wash clothes on a washboard as a German farm family would have done in the early 1900s.
