CHIP Perinatal CoverageStarting Jan. 1, 2007, Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) perinatal coverage will provide prenatal care for the unborn children of low-income women who do not qualify for Medicaid. [More information about CHIP perinatal coverage] Women’s Health ProgramStarting Jan. 1, 2007, the Texas Women’s Health Program will provide low-income women with gynecological exams, related health screenings, and birth control through Texas Medicaid. [More information about the Women's Health Program] New Requirement for MedicaidA new federal law requires states to begin verifying the citizenship and identity of people applying for or receiving Medicaid. This new requirement does not change who is eligible to receive services. HHSC will begin applying the new requirement July 1, 2006, for current Medicaid clients during their regular recertification process. HHSC is sending a letter to all Medicaid clients in June explaining the requirement. Clients will receive an additional reminder in their renewal packet. HHSC Legislative Appropriations Request (LAR)HHSC submitted its Legislative Appropriations Request for the Fiscal Years 2008-2009 biennium on Aug. 18, 2006. New Eligibility SystemThe Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is creating a menu of options for consumers applying for state services, including Medicaid, food stamps, the Children's Health Insurance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and long-term care.
