December 23, 2006Government Canyon SNAHoliday Hike — Be one of the first to enjoy Government Canyon's remote and rugged northeast Protected Habitat Area, which is closed seasonally for golden-cheeked warbler nesting. This is an all day hike and participants must be in good physical shape and able to hike around 12-13 miles over broken and rocky terrain with good portion of elevation gain and loss. Group size limited; dress in layers appropriate to the weather; carry at least three liters of water per person; bring snacks, lunch, sunscreen, hat and raingear; wear sturdy, well broken-in hiking shoes or boots and bring extra socks if needed. Join Kendall County's rainwater expert, John Kight, for a presentation and discussion of rainwater collection systems. Learn the basics of design, capacity and cost. Since 2002, every drop of water for drinking, cooking, bathing, cleaning and lawn irrigation at his family's home north of Boerne comes from the clouds, with no backup water supply. Group size limited to 18; not suitable for children. Learn the basics for day hiking: what to take, safety and emergency planning, water requirements, how to dress, footwear and simple map reading. Please dress for hiking, bring plenty of water and your packed daypack and find out if you have the right things in it.
