Input Sought on Land Transfers Near Brownwood, Weslaco

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is seeking public input on two proposed land transfers involving Lake Brownwood State Park near Brownwood and the World Birding Center at Estero Llano Grande State Park near Weslaco.

At 7 p.m. on March 8 near Brownwood, a public meeting will be held concerning the proposed transfer of property within Lake Brownwood State Park that is currently used as Camp Wood Lake by the Heart of Texas Council of the Girl Scouts.

The proposal would transfer approximately 47 acres within Lake Brownwood State Park to the Brown County Water Improvement District. This 47-acre property has been leased by TPWD to the Girl Scouts-Heart of Texas Council, Inc. since 1954 as a camp for education and outdoor experience.

The transfer would release the department from responsibility on property used and controlled by another entity. The meeting will take place at the Group Recreation Hall at Lake Brownwood State Park. The public and concerned citizens are invited to attend and will have the opportunity to voice their opinions.

At 7 p.m. on March 9 in Weslaco, a public meeting will be held at the Best Western Conference Room at 415 S. International Blvd. The City of Weslaco has purchased Lakeview Park in Hidalgo County, adjacent to Estero Llano Grande State Park and intends to transfer unoccupied areas of the property to TPWD as part of Weslaco's match for development of the World Birding Center in Weslaco.
