Weekly Migratory Bird Hunting Report

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February.

Light Goose Conservation Order: The first week of the coastal edition of the special “electronic caller” season was fair at best. Clear blue skies and stiff north winds did hunters no favors in coaxing decoying birds. Unfortunately, the forecast for this week calls for much of the same. Birds are beginning to break into smaller, more spread out pods across the prairie. There are 200 here, 500 here, but the largest concentrations seem to be feeding on winter wheat fields. Roost ponds are becoming a problem as dry weather continues to dominate southern Texas and many duck ponds, that also doubled as goose roosts during the regular season, are drying. Some Northeast Texas residents are reporting they have seen groups of geese heading north. Typically, around Valentine’s Day, some coastal geese do begin their trek back to spring breeding grounds. Hunters are hoping for southerly winds to return which could promote fog. Still plenty of geese to hunt in the Anahuac marsh. El Campo, Eagle Lake, Garwood and Midfield still have huntable numbers of birds. The West Zone season began Feb.7 and most of the snow geese are roosting on Lake Etter or on wet playas near Spearman. Prospects are fair to good.
