Mean Green Head To Memphis

MEMPHIS — The North Texas tennis team plays its final road match of the year on Saturday at Memphis. The match is scheduled to start at noon. Mean Green fans can follow the match with live stats.

North Texas (10-9) is coming off a rigorous 4-2 win at UT Arlington on Wednesday that saw junior Ivana Babic clinch the victory for UNT and pick up her 10th singles win of the year. Also in the match, senior Maria Kononova collected her program-best 80th career singles win and her classmate Tamuna Kutubidze win her 66th career singles match, which moved her into second-place all-time.

Head coach Sujay Lama has stressed building confidence and momentum heading into the conference tournament in Houston, which will be held April 18-21.

The Mean Green who have won three conference titles in the last eight years have proven to have one of the deepest lineups in the league, especially at the top of the lineup. Kononova and Kutubidze who are the Mean Green's top two players in the lineup have a combined 24-10 record this spring. Kononova has won 12 of her last 13 singles matches and after beating her Maverick opponent on Wednesday in straight sets that took less than an hour, she appears to be picking up steam at the most important time of the year.

The bottom of the lineup has also come through for UNT this season. Positions five and six have a combined record of 19-14 led by Babic's 10 wins.

In doubles, North Texas has always been dominate under Lama who is in his 13th season as the Mean Green's head coach. But 2019 has been one of the team's best seasons at doubles. North Texas is 31-17 in all dual doubles matches and 14-2 at the No. 1 position and 9-6 at the No. 2 position. The Mean Green have won the doubles point in over 80 percent of this season's matches.

Saturday will mark the fifth time in the last six years UNT has played the Tigers (11-8). The Mean Green have won two of the last three meetings. Memphis is coming off a 6-1 win over Marshall. They are 2-1 on the year against Conference USA opponents. Its only loss to a C-USA opponent was a 7-0 loss to Old Dominion who enters this weekend as the No. 32 nationally ranked team.

Following Saturday's match at Memphis, North Texas will host Senior Day, its final regular season match of the year, on Wednesday at 3 p.m. versus SMU.
