Mean Green Host K-State, Arizona

DENTON — The North Texas tennis team that has won three matches in a row by a combined overall score of 17-1 heads into this weekend to host back-to-back power-five opponents.

The Mean Green (5-3) take on Kansas State on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Waranch Tennis Complex and then Arizona on Sunday at 11 a.m. Friday's match against K-State will have free pizza and lemonade while supplies last for fans who attend.

"We are slowly but surely putting the pieces together and gaining confidence," said head coach Sujay Lama. "The key is to be 100 percent focussed on improvement. For that to happen we have to put great practices together day in and day out."

Great practices have led North Texas to its current three-match winning streak and has carried momentum into this week's set of games.

"We are excited to play two quality teams at home," Lama said. "We are definitively looking forward to the challenge. It is an opportunity to raise our level of play and build on the momentum we have."

Leading the momentum hasn't just been the team's seniors who will go down as the greatest senior class in program history. Junior Ivana Babic has carried the backend of the team's singles lineup. Babic is undefeated this year in singles with a perfect 5-0 record as she's played at the No. 5 and No. 6 position. Prior to the season started, Lama said how the back of the lineup performed is what would make the difference.

In the middle of the lineup, junior Alexandra Heczey and sophomore Nidhi Surapaneni have combined to go 10-4 in singles to help lead UNT to three straight dominating performances.

At the top of the lineup, the No. 69 nationally ranked Tamuna Kutubidze has been the workhouse so far of the team as she's carried momentum over from the fall to put together a impressive 7-1 singles record.

Kutubidze and fellow senior Maria Kononova have also gotten in done in doubles. The No. 19 nationally ranked doubles team is 2-0 at the No. 1 position.

North Texas lost 4-1 to K-State last year in Manhattan, Kansas. The last time they played Arizona was in 2017 and they beat the Wildcats 5-2.
