North Texas Tennis Defeats Regional Rival No. 70 TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas -The North Texas tennis team defeated regional foe No.70 TCU, 4-3, for the second time in program history on Wednesday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

In doubles play, the Mean Green duo of Agustina Valenzuela and Dane Joubert had the first win of the day, defeating TCU's No. 3 pair, 8-0. Freshman Alexis Thoma and Kamilla Galieva secured the doubles point for the Mean Green with an 8-7 victory at the No. 2 spot.

In singles play, Agustina Valenzulea had the deciding match point at the No. 4 spot. She went 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 against TCU's Sofiko Kadzhaya, ensuring a Mean Green victory.

"When I realized that my match was the deciding match I found my inner strength," Valenzulea said. "I was four-all when my teammates came to cheer me on. Although my nerves got to me I knew I could do it, my coaches helped me stay focused and I fought for every point."

North Texas came back from being tied 2-2, with deficits at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Freshman Alexis Thoma fought, keeping the Mean Green alive with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot.

Ana Sofia Cordero shut out Anne Sundling from TCU 6-0, 6-0 to start off singles play for the Mean Green.

On Friday, Mar. 7, the Mean Green welcomes the Louisville Cardinals for a nine-game homestand at the Waranch Tennis Complex at 3 p.m., and will finish up a busy weekend on Sunday, Mar. 10, against Denver at 11 a.m.
