North Texas Hosts Lamar On Saturday

DENTON — The North Texas tennis team hosts its first Denton match of the year on Saturday when they host Lamar (0-2) at noon.

The Mean Green (1-2) opened the 2019 season with a dominating 7-0 win over Abilene Christian in a match that was played indoors in Plano in preparation for their indoors matches in Iowa the following week.

"We are looking forward to kicking off our outdoor home match play at Waranch," said associate head coach Jeff Hammond. "We have had a very solid week of practice and it's time to roll."

Playing at the Waranch Tennis Complex has been a nice sight for the Mean Green who have had a winning record at home in 11 of the 12 full seasons Lama has coached in Denton. Dating back to last season, UNT has won three of their last four at home and look to extend that streak as they host Lamar on Saturday.

UNT last played Lamar in 2017 and won 6-1. The match as played in Denton.

Lamar and North Texas have a long standing in-state rivalry that dates back to 1980, which was just the second season of the program. All-time the Mean Green have 13 wins against Lamar and have beaten them eight straight times. Their last loss to Lamar came in 1998.
