Kirk Strikes Out Nine In Mean Green Loss

Arlington, Texas (4/24/13) - Nina Villanueva hit a two-run homer to give the UTA softball team a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against North Texas on Wednesday night at Allan Saxe Field.

The Mean Green falls to 22-22 overall, while the Mavs improve to 19-24. UTA ties the season series at 1-1. The two teams will meet again at Lovelace Stadium on Tuesday, April 30 in Denton. UTA defeated the Mean Green for the first time since the 2008 season.

North Texas outhit the Mavs, 5-2, but left nine runners stranded on base. The Mean Green had an early opportunity in the first inning to score runs but left the bases loaded.

Jackie Miller put North Texas ahead, 1-0, in the top of the fourth with a solo home run. It was her fifth of the season and her third in the last five games.

UTA led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk, and Villanueva put UTA on top with her first career home run.

Teri Lyles picked up the win for UTA. She relieved Callie Collins after she gave up the homer, and Lyles shut down the Mean Green. She gave up just two hits in four innings of work.

Ashley Kirk (10-8) picked up the loss despite striking out nine batters. She gave up two runs off two hits in six innings of work.

North Texas returns to action this weekend when it faces ULM in a three-game series.
