Softball Defeats #10 Louisiana

WACO - For the first time since 2015, the Mean Green defeated a top 10 opponent, downing No. 10 Louisiana 5-1 in the second game of a double-header Saturday. It is the second win over a ranked opponent in 2019 after defeating then No. 20 Texas A&M in the opening weekend.

Last time the Mean Green (9-4) defeated an opponent in the top 10 was in the same city with a 1-0 win over #7 Baylor in early 2015.

"It was a win we really needed," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "It's been tough playing against great competition, and we needed a spark. Hope was great. Lacy was great. There were a lot of kids who played very well today. This is just a win we needed."

Led by a strong pitching performance from Hope Trautwein and a 3-for-4, 3RBI performance at the plate from Lacy Gregory, the Mean Green recovered from a five-inning 10-2 loss to the Raging Cajuns (14-1) earlier in the day. North Texas now faces Kent State in the Baylor Invitational championship game at 12:30 Sunday.

In the front side of the double-header, the Mean Green scored early. Gregory drove home Katie Clark before Rhylie Makawe drove in Camille Grahmann chasing the Louisiana starter from the game in the first inning. The Raging Cajuns would score three runs in the home half of the frame, adding another in the second to take a 4-2 lead.

Bailey Tindell and Jenna Goodrich split the pitching duties, with Tindell going an inning allowing four runs on three hits. Goodrich pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing six runs. Louisiana brough home three more runs in the third, before adding another three in the fifth to end the game on run-rule.

The Mean Green had a short memory. Just a few hours after a run-rule loss, the Mean Green turned around to defeat the Raging Cajuns and pick up its first win of the Baylor Invitational. Trautwein tossed a gem.

She went the full 7.0 innings allowing just one run on three hits and walking two.

"Hope commanded the zone," DeLong said. "That is one of the better lineups we will see all year. She really had her way with their lineup and kept them off balance."

The Mean Green scored early again, grabbing two runs in the first on Gregory's second home-run of the year, a two-run blast to left field. Those runs would be the difference for the majority of the game, as both pitchers had batters struggling. Louisiana's Summer Ellyson was on the hook for four runs, but struck out eight in five innings of work.

"We are facing elite pitching," DeLong said. "We just put the ball in play. We've had chances this weekend, this game we were able to execute when we got those chances."

North Texas added runs in the fourth and Gregory drove another run home in the fifth before an insurance run came via a Goodrich single that scored Grahmann. Trautwein ended the game in commanding fashion, retiring the side in order.

The Mean Green look to take home the Baylor Invitational title in Sunday's championship game at 12:30 p.m.
