Homers Lead North Texas Softball Past UTA

San Marcos, Texas (2/23/13) - Jordan Terry and Jackie Miller both homered to lead the North Texas softball team to a 4-3 win against UTA on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium. The Mean Green lost to No. 25 Baylor, 8-3, in the first game of the day.

With a 3-1 record, North Texas will play undefeated No. 25 Baylor in the championship game of the Texas Shootout on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The Mean Green earned the No. 2 seed with wins over Texas State, Texas Tech and the Mavericks. The Mean Green improves to 7-8 overall and 3-3 on its road trip to San Antonio and San Marcos.

Home runs accounted for six of the seven Mean Green runs in today's two games. Freshman Taylor Schoblocher hit her first career home run against Baylor, giving North Texas a brief 3-1 lead. Jordan Terry recorded her second home run of the tournament, hitting a two-run shot in the third inning against UTA. Jackie Miller's solo home run ended up being the game winner against the Mavericks in the fourth.

Dani Hoff plated the first run of the game against UTA, posting a double down the right-field line. Pinch runner Madison Tierney scored from third on the play. Terry brought Hoff home with her long ball that put North Texas ahead, 3-0. Miller hit her first home run of the season in the fourth inning, extending NT's lead to 4-0.

Ashley Kirk pitched a shutout through five innings but got into trouble in the sixth. She gave up an RBI double in the sixth and was relieved by Lauren Poole. The left-hander gave up a two-RBI double before ending the threat with two groundouts. Brittany Simmons picked up her second save of the weekend by retiring the side in the seventh.

Kirk earned the win and improved to 3-3. She pitched 5.1 innings and gave up three runs off four hits. She struck out seven.

Baylor outhit the Mean Green, 11-1. The Bears' pitcher Whitney Canion made one mistake against North Texas, giving up a three-run homer to Schoblocher in the second inning. She walked two batters before giving up the homer. The home run gave North Texas a 3-1 lead.

The Baylor offense responded with a three-run homer of its own in the fourth inning to retake the lead, 4-3. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first by walking in a run. Baylor added to the score with four runs in the fifth off two doubles, a single and a Mean Green error.

Simmons picked up the loss, giving up four runs in 2.2 innings of work.
