Finney joined the Mean Green coaching staff as a graduate assistant ahead of the 2018 season. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Finney was the linebackers coach at Trinity Valley Community College during the 2017 season.

Finney spent two seasons in Denton (2015 and 2016) following two seasons in Athens at Trinity Valley. During his senior season with the Mean Green, Finney was second on the team in tackles with 78 (41 solo), with one sack, 5.5 tackles for loss and two pass break-ups in 13 starts at middle linebacker. As a junior, his first season at North Texas, Finney played in all 12 games, totaling 42 tackles, including 20 solo, with 1.0 tackles for loss, one pass break-up, one pass defended and one quarterback hurry.

At Trinity Valley, Finney was named the 2014 Defensive Player of the Year by the National Junior College Athletic Association and was a NJCAA First Team All-American and the Southwest Junior College Football Conference Defensive Most Valuable Player As a sophomore, he led the team with 104 tackles, ranking 12th in the nation.
