Three Games In Three Days

HONOLULU, Hawaii — After a convincing season opening home victory on Tuesday, the Mean Green basketball team has headed to Honolulu for the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic where they will play three games in three days at the University of Hawaii's Stan Sherrif Center.

North Texas (1-0) takes on Humboldt State on Friday at 8:30 pm CT. They then will face the West Coast Conference's Portland on Saturday at 8:30 pm CT and finish its trip with a game against Hawaii at 10:00 pm CT. All three of the games can heard on the radio on KNTU 88.1 FM, KHYI 95.3 FM or by using the TuneIN app. Sunday's game versus Hawaii will be streamed on BigWest.TV as well.

"When we're physical and moving the ball on offense and getting out in transition we're really good," said head coach Grant McCasland after UNT's 89-55 win on Tuesday over Angelo State. "It's a team deal. We share the ball well. It's just a matter of sometimes doing a little too much."

As far as this weekend goes, McCasland says it's all business.

"We're here to get wins and to get better," McCasland said.

While redshirt freshman Umoja Gibson stole the show on Tuesday with 32 points on just 14 shots in 24 minutes in his first game back from a broken leg he suffered nearly a year ago, as a team North Texas was able to come away with a comfortable victory thanks to an all-around performance by the team. And most notably doing the things McCasland referenced, physicality, hustling and ball movement.

On Tuesday, quietly senior guard Michael Miller did a phenomenal job crashing the boards and coming away with a career-high 10 rebounds, five of which were offensive rebounds.

"Our guards rebounding has always been something that separated us," McCasland said.

A year removed from setting the school-record for most single-season assists, junior Ryan Woolridge dropped 10 assists on Tuesday and used his pace to start action, get to the rim and attack.

Woolridge's pace combined with the hustle from the entire team on both ends of the court allowed the team to go on considerable double-digit runs and free shooters like Gibson and DJ Draper open for easy buckets.

McCasland wants to see more of that this weekend and with more consistency as the team aims to leave Hawaii on Sunday with a 4-0 overall record, which would be the first time since the 1990-91 season they accomplished that.

  • DJ Draper's 19 points on Tuesday were a Super Pit career-best for the redshirt junior.
