UNT Scores 100 In Win Over HBU

DENTON – Orianna Shillow sank a 3-pointer for North Texas with seconds remaining for a 100-75 win over Houston Baptist to commemorate the first time UNT has eclipsed the century mark in over 20 years as Madi Townley netted her first double-double with a career-high 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead six Mean Green in double figures inside the Super Pit Wednesday afternoon.

The last time UNT scored 100 or more was Nov. 21, 1997, in a 116-39 victory over Texas Southern. The 100 totaled Wednesday was just the fifth occurrence in program history.

"We took care of home," head coach Jalie Mitchell said.  "Orianna hitting the three at the end was huge for her and for our team. This was a great game of a lot different people stepping up, having big games and being able to celebrate one another."

North Texas (4-4, 0-0 C-USA) handed out a season-best 20 assists helped by a career-high nine from Trena Mims. Anisha George registered 15 points, Velma Mitchell scored a career-high 12, Charlene Shepherd also had a dozen, and Grace Goodhart had 10 alongside Terriell Bradley. In the annual Kids' Game in front of thousands of school-aged children, every player on the North Texas roster scored. The Mean Green pulled down 48 boards compared to 22 from HBU (4-4, 0-0 Southland) for their largest rebounding margin of the season and also outscored the Huskies in the paint, 56-28.

An offensive rebound and putback by Townley in the first quarter put the Mean Green in control at 20-8, but the Huskies went on an 11-2 run before Callie Owens made a pair of free throws for a 24-19 UNT lead with three seconds on the clock.

With the Mean Green ahead 33-24 midway through the second, Shepherd made a layup and sank two from the line to extend the lead to 37-24. The Huskies succeeded on a jumper in the paint for the last score of the first half and UNT leading 44-34.

A 14-3 North Texas run to begin the second half ignited a 33-point third quarter to tie the program record set earlier this season versus North Dakota State. Deja Terrell was successful on two free throw attempts to push the lead to 68-42 with 3:33 remaining in the period. Mitchell tallied five straight points to finish the quarter as the Mean Green led 77-55.

Tatum Henderson drilled a three with just under three minutes remaining in the contest for a 96-66 advantage before Shillow made one-of-two from the line. With 11 seconds on the clock, Shillow nailed a three from the right side for the 25-point victory.

"We called that play for Tatum but 'O' has so much confidence. She hit it and we were so excited she made it," Townley said.

The Mean Green finish out their three-game homestand Saturday with a 3 p.m. contest against Utah State.
