While one can argue that stadiums are like snowflakes in that no two are identical, if any stadium can truly be said to be unique, it’s Apogee Stadium.
Apogee, with its ecological, energy-efficient design, was the first newly-constructed college football stadium in the nation to be awarded a LEED Platinum Certification, the highest level of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design status. More than that, it has its own inexhaustible source of electricity.
In early 2012, three wind turbines began generating electricity to the Eagle Point power grid, providing energy to surrounding buildings and, during football games, accounting for a significant portion of Apogee’s electric needs.
The turbines generate approximately half a million kilowatt hours, eliminating the emission of 323 metric tons of CO2. Estimates suggested the turbines will offset energy consumption in the Mean Green Village by six percent.
The turbines towers are 120 feet high and the blades are 30 feet long, and their construction was made possible by a $2 million grant from the State Energy Conservation Office.
