Jeff Hammond concludes his third season with the North Texas tennis team as an associate head coach.
In his three years, Hammond has helped guide the Mean Green to two Conference USA semifinal tournament appearances, and he has mentored five student-athletes that combined for 10 all-conference honors.
In the 2015-16 season, Hammond's expertise was especially integral in the development of one of the top freshman classes to come through North Texas. By the year's end - and with Hammond's help - each of four Mean Green newcomers were playing in one of six singles positions. Most notably, freshmen Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze earned sports on the First Team All-C-USA singles squad while also taking first team doubles honors.
Prior to North Texas, Hammond was the assistant women’s tennis coach at SMU in June of 2012. Previously he spent six years at TCU, serving as the head coach from 2007-10, after two seasons as an assistant.
As head coach, Hammond led the Horned Frogs to four consecutive Mountain West titles, four straight NCAA appearances and achieved top-25 team rankings each year. He was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009. Hammond coached three players to All-America honors and saw several players reach the finals and semifinals in the doubles and singles NCAA indoor and outdoor championships.
As an assistant at TCU, he was tabbed the ITA Southwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year as he helped the Horned Frogs advance to the NCAA Round of 16 as a team in 2006. He coached three players to All-America honors including the 2006 ITA All-American Tournament Singles Champion.
During the 2003 and 2004 seasons, Hammond served as the volunteer assistant coach for the nationally-ranked Southern California men’s team. He helped guide the 2004 USC squad to a co-Pac-10 team championship and to the NCAA semifinals. The Trojans finished No. 4 in the rankings.
Hammond started his coaching career at University High in Irvine, Calif., in 2000 after serving as an assistant tennis pro at The Pointe Hilton on South Mountain in Phoenix. During his two-year stint with the boys' varsity tennis squad at University High, Hammond led his team to two California Interscholastic Federation team championships. Following the 2000 title, he was named the Orange County Register Coach of the Year.
Hammond earned his bachelor's degree in history from the University of Vermont in 1993, where he was a four-year starter on the tennis team with a .694 winning percentage in singles. As a senior, he was co-captain, and in 1992 he helped lead the Catamounts to the North Atlantic Conference championship. Following graduation, he spent time playing on the United States Tennis Association Pro Circuit. In 2001, he finished ranked No. 1 in Men's 30s Singles in Southern California and #10 in the United States.
Hammond and his wife, Amy, former Arizona State Pac-10 platform diving champion in 1994, have two sons, Eric and Kevin.
