Chemistry Majors Scholarships & Awards

Each year the Chemistry Department recognizes several outstanding undergraduate chemistry majors through scholarships and awards.

SOME SCHOLARSHIPS REQUIRE A COMPLETED APPLICATION AND SOME DO NOT.

THOSE THAT DO NOT REQUIRE A COMPLETED APPLICATION, DO REQUIRE A NOMINATION IN THE FORM OF A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FROM A FACULTY MEMBER.

SOME SCHOLARSHIPS REQUIRE CVs AND OTHER ITEMS.

THE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS BELOW.

Undergraduate Awards

SCHOLARSHIPS THAT REQUIRE A COMPLETED APPLICATION

VIRGINIA H. AND NORMAN E. WEST SCHOLARSHIP
APPLICATION FORM (2019)
Given to an outstanding incoming undergraduate chemistry major. Students are required to fill out an application, have their official ACT or SAT scores sent to UNT, and have a letter of recommendation sent from their high school science teacher, or in the case of a transfer student, from a previous science teacher. Members of the Undergraduate Affairs Committee determines the winner of the award.

The award consists of a monetary award, which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, and a certificate. The awardee is recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.

The deadline for applications is Friday, March 29, 2019.

W.N. MASTERS AWARD
APPLICATION FORM (2019)
Given to the outstanding junior or senior major in the natural sciences. The award was first given in 1980. Students must submit an application form accompanied by a set of transcripts and a listing of two faculty references who are requested to supply recommendation letters.

Members of the Undergraduate Affairs Committee determine the winner of the award. Students must attend UNT the following year to receive the award.

The award consists of a monetary award which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, certificate, and their name engraved on a permanent plaque located in the Chemistry Conference Room. The awardee is recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.

The deadline for applications is Friday, March 29, 2019.

CHEMISTRY CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION STUDENT ENDOWMENT
APPLICATION FORM (2019)
This scholarship was created and funded by our alumni and faculty in celebration of the 100 year anniversary of the Chemistry Department. The award is open to both undergraduate and graduate Chemistry students, and recognizes excellence in academic achievement and financial need.

Students must submit an application form, a faculty letter of recommendation, and complete the FAFSA; applications are due Friday, March 29, 2019. The award consists of a monetary award, which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, and a certificate. The awardee is recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.

LOIS HONEYCUTT BODINE SCHOLARSHIP
APPLICATION FORM (2019)
Given as a memorial for former UNT Chemistry student, Lois Honeycutt Bodine. This scholarship recognizes excellence in academic achivement and is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Students must submit an application form and a faculty letter of recommendation; applications are due Friday, March 29, 2019. The award consists of a monetary award, which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, and a certificate. The awardee is recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.

JOANN PETERS CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP
COS APPLICATION FORM
This scholarship was created and funded by a chemistry alum, and the first award will be given in Spring 2019. The award is open to undergraduate Chemistry majors. Eligible applicants must be full-time students in good academic standing with the department and College of Science, citizens/permanent residents and have completed the FAFSA in the award year, and be an active member in The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) (or its successor) for twelve months prior to applying for this scholarship.

This scholarship is awarded through the College of Science (COS). The award consists of a monetary award, which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, and a certificate.

SCHOLARSHIPS THAT REQUIRE A NOMINATION FROM FACULTY MEMBERS

OUTSTANDING FRESHMAN AWARD
Given to the outstanding freshman chemistry student. Students must have freshman standing during the Spring semester the award is announced. The award is based on performance on an Outstanding Freshman Exam which was administered in late April. Students are individually selected by their instructors to participate in the exam.

The award consists of a monetary award, which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, a copy of the CRC Handbook, and a certificate. The awardee is recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.

ADDIE MAE LLOYD CURBO AWARD
Given to the outstanding freshman chemistry major. Students must have freshman standing during the Spring semester the award is announced. The award is based on performance on an Outstanding Freshman Exam which is administered in late April. Students are individually selected by their instructors to participate in the exam.

The award consists of a monetary award, which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, certificate, a copy of the CRC Handbook, and their name engraved on permanent plaque located in the Chemistry Conference Room. The awardee is recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.

HERMAN AND CLOTA VAUGHAN AWARD
Given to the outstanding chemistry majors of either sophomore standing or in sophomore level classes. It was endowed by Clota and Herman Vaughan who received their B.S. Degrees in Chemistry from UNT in 1950. It was first awarded in 1991.

Members of the Undergraduate Affairs Committee determine the winner of the award. Students must attend UNT the following year to receive any benefit.

The award consists of a monetary award which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, certificate, and their name engraved on permanent plaque located in the Chemistry Conference Room. The awardee is recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.

J.L. CARRICO AWARD
Given for outstanding performance by a senior chemistry major. It is the Department's oldest and most prestigious award. It was established in honor of Dr. James L. Carrico who was a long standing chairman of the Chemistry Department. The award was first awarded in 1969.

It is based on a student's academic record in the sciences and math along with any other considerations such as senior level research participation. All chemistry graduating seniors are automatically considered for this award. Members of the Undergraduate Affairs Committee determine the winner of the award.

The award consists of a monetary award applied toward tuition and fees of the current Spring semester, certificate, and name engraved on a permanent plaque located in the Chemistry Conference Room. The awardee is also recognized at the University's Honors Day Ceremony held in late April, and at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.

RE CALDERON SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
Awarded every other year to Chemistry with the first award given in 2007. This award was established by Dr. Jose Calderon and his wife, Dr. Alicia Re Cruz. This award is given to an undergraduate chemistry major for outstanding research at the undergraduate level. This award is given every other year. The next award will be given in Spring 2020.

The award consists of a monetary award which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year and a certificate. The awardee is recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.

VIRGIL E. AND CATHERINE A. ROGERS SCHOLARSHIP
This award is given to an undergraduate chemistry major for outstanding research at the undergraduate level. This award was first given in 2006.

The award consists of a monetary award which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, and a certificate. The awardee is recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.

BURL GORDON ROGERS AWARD
Given to the chemistry major with the highest GPA who has been accepted to, and enrolled in medical school. The award consists of a monetary award and certificate. The awardee is recognized at the Department's Honors Day ceremony held in early May.

Departmental Service Award

ROBERT WADE BROWN AWARD
Given to the outstanding undergraduate or graduate student who has most helped the chemistry department through his or her service activities. This award was established by Robert Wade Brown and was first awarded in 1985.

Nominations are solicited from chemistry faculty. Together, members of the Undergraduate Affairs Committee and Graduate Affairs Committee decide on the winner of the award. There is a monetary award which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, certificate, and name engraved on a permanent plaque located in the Chemistry Conference Room. The awardee is recognized at the University's Honors Day held in late April, and at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held in early May.
