The Fall 2019 Information Science PhD Program Application is now CLOSED.
Fall 2020 Applicants- Submit your application and application materials (specified below) by November 1, 2019 to be considered for Fall 2020 admission. Applications submitted after November 1 and applications that remain incomplete on November 1 will not be accepted or reviewed for admission.
To ensure full processing by all offices, including international admissions and scholarships, all IS PhD Program application materials are due by November 1 of the year preceding the fall semester of initial enrollment; applicants will not be admitted for spring semesters.
Applicants must meet all general admission requirements and be accepted by the UNT Toulouse Graduate School (940-565-2383).
Toulouse Graduate School:
Graduate applicants to UNT are evaluated holistically, based on specific departmental and program requirements. In the past, successful candidates usually have met certain GPA minima
- at least 3.50 (4.0 scale) GPA in the undergraduate degree for direct admission to Doctoral programs
- or 3.50 GPA in Masters-level studies for admission to Doctoral programs

IS PhD Program admission criteria:
Admission to the IS PhD program is based on a holistic review process that uses multiple criteria related to both academic history and potential for success in the research field. Criteria include:
- a completed application (click the apply now button to complete the IS PhD application);
- completed master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution;
- competitive official test scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), including verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing;
- three (3) letters of recommendation from former professors, employers, or others who can give evidence of applicant's aptitude for, as well as interest in, a research career in information science;
- evidence of experience, knowledge, skills, and aspirations from the following:
- personal statement (300–500 words) of career objectives, which should include:
- doctoral research areas of interest;
- identify IS PhD faculty that you would like to study with
- research, professional, or community experiences that demonstrate motivation, commitment, and potential for doctoral work;
- accomplishments (publications, presentations, awards);
- communication skills including multilingual proficiency; technology skills; and contribution to diversity of the field.

- academic writing sample (published paper, major term paper, thesis chapter, etc.), please be the sole author of your writing sample;
- the link to a 5 minute video that answers the following questions:
- Why are you applying to the IS PhD program at UNT?
- What are your research interests for the IS PhD program?
- What is your purpose for pursueing a PhD?
- What IS faculty would you like to study with and how does their research correspond with your interests?

An admission committee comprised of IS PhD Program faculty members representing different UNT academic units reviews applications. Members of the committee evaluate and balance a number of factors which, when taken together, provide evidence that an applicant possesses superior scholastic ability, has the potential for success in a rigorous graduate program of research study, and will perform well within the broad context of the information field.
Admissions are highly competitive, depending on applicant qualifications and the availability of faculty to mentor doctoral students. Not all qualified applicants can be accepted. If additional information is needed to evaluate the admissibility of an applicant, an interview may be requested.
