Scholarships and Eligibility Requirements

The Margaret A. Carroll Endowed Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Award

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.
  • Maintain May be full or part time student in the Department of Information Science at the University 
  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work
  • Enroll as a full-time or part time Ph.D.  student in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Information Science at the University.
  • Funds may be used to provide support for travel and associated expenses of attending conferences, doing research, etc.


The Clarke, Kennerly & Thomas scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.
  • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at the graduate level or at least 12 credit hours at the undergraduate level in the Department of Information Science at the University of North Texas for the period of the scholarship.
  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.
  • May be either an undergraduate or graduate student.

The Dorothy Thomas scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.
  • Maintain full time enrollment in the Department of Information Science at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degrees
  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.

Margaret Irby Nichols Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.
  • Enroll in 9 or more hours in the Department of Information Science at the University, at the time of receiot of stipend.
  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.
  • Must be a Masters student in the Department of Information Science at the University


The Lady Kate Medders Alumni Society scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.
  • May be part time student in the Department of Information Science at the University if no qualified full time applicants.
  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.
  • May be either an undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Maintain full time enrollment in the Department of Information Science at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program.  In the event no qualified applicant possesses this characteristic, part time students in the Department of Information Science at the University will be eligible to be considered. 


Florence Richardson Wilhite Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.
  • May be full or part time student in the Department of Information Science at the University.
  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.
  • May be either an undergraduate or graduate student.

Virginia Clark Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.
  • A minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.
  • Maintain full or part time enrollment at the University of North Texas.
  • Enroll as full-time or part-time in any Department of Information Science program in the University.
  • Must be a graduate student in the Department of Information Science at the University. In the event no qualified applicant possesses this characteristic, part time students will be eligible for consideration.


The Melba S. Harvill Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an application for the Scholarship must possess the following

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.

  • May be full time or part time student in the Department of Information Science at the University

  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.

  • May be either an undergraduate or graduate student.


The Herman L. Totten Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.

  • May be a full time or part time student in the Department of Information Science at the University.

  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.

  • May be either an undergraduate or graduate student.


Donald B. and Ana D. Cleveland Houston Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of Information Science in effect at the time of any award.

  • A minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.

  • Maintain full time or part time enrollment at the University.

  • Enroll as a full time or part time student in the University in the Department of Information Science and live within 100 miles of Houston, Texas at the time of application; In the event no applicant possesses this characteristic, then any student enrolling full time or part time in the Department of Information Sciences Master’s program at the University will be eligible for consideration.

Donald B. and Ana D. Cleveland Medical Informatics Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of Information Science in effect at the time of any award.
  • A minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.
  • Maintain full time or part time enrollment at the University.
  • Enroll as a full time or part time Ph.D.  student in the University in the Department of Information Science. Preference is given to students specializing in Medical Informatics. In the event that no applicant possesses this characteristic, then all Department of Information Science Ph.D. students will be eligible for consideration.

Kenneth L. Ferstl Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.

  • May be a full time or part time student in the Department of Information Science at the University.

  • Must be a masters student and maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.

  • Preference given to students pursuing classification, adult services or public libraries specializations.


Doralyn Hickey Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an application for the scholarship must possess the following:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.

  • May be a full time or part time student in the Department of Information Science at the University.

  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.

  • May be either an undergraduate or graduate student.

  • Student must exhibit a confirmed interest in pursuing a professional career in the technical services area of library and information science.


H. W. Wilson scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.

  • Maintain full time enrollment in the Department of Information Science at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program.

  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.

  • May be either an undergraduate or graduate student.


Frasier McConnell Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.

  • Enrolled in at least 9 credit hours at the graduate level in the Department of Information Science at the University of North Texas for the period of the scholarship.

  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.

  • Must be a graduate student in the Department of Information Science at the University.


Brock Saxe Endowed scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.

  • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at the graduate level or at least 12 credit hours at the undergraduate level in the Department of Information Science at the University of North Texas for the period of the scholarship.

  • Enrolled as a full-time student in the Department of Information Science at the University; in the event no applicant possesses this characteristic, then students enrolling part-time in the Department will be eligible for consideration.

  • A minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.

  • Must be a graduate student.


UNT IS Excellence scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.

  • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at the graduate level or at least 12 credit hours at the undergraduate level in the Department of Information Science at the University of North Texas for the period of the scholarship.

  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.

  • May be either an undergraduate or graduate student.


Sarah Law Kennerly Endowed Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.
  • May be full or part time student in the Department of Information Science at the University.
  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.
  • May be either an undergraduate or graduate student.

The Mary Guittard Voegtle Law Librarian and Legal Informatics Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award unless the student is nearing completion of his or her degree program and does not need at least half-time enrollment.
  • Enroll as at least a half time graduate student in Law Librarianship and Legal Informatics (or its successor) at the University. In the event no applicant meets this criterion then graduate students enrolling at least half-time in the Department of Information Science at the University will be considered.
  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work.
  • Applicants to this scholarship must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words describing the applicant’s intent to participate in international professional and/or academic development conference travel and become a law librarian upon completion of his or her education at the University.

The Howard Griesdorf Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Award

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.
  • Maintain May be full or part time student in the Department of Information Science at the University 
  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work
  • Enroll as a full-time or part time Ph.D. student in the Information Science Ph.D. Program at the University.  In the event that no applicant meets this criterion then any Information Science applicant will be considered.

The Library Willie Scholarship

This scholarship is for a $1600 award divided between semesters.   It does not qualify for or grant an out-of-state tuition waiver.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must possess the following characteristics:

  • Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department in effect at the time of any award.
  • Maintain full time student in the Department of Information Science at the University unless the student is nearing completion of his or her degree and does not need full time enrollment.
  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.00 basis on all college level work
  • May be an undergraduate or graduate student
  • Preference will be given to applicants who graduated from a high school in Val Verde County, Texas

Wiant Law Librarianship Award

Sarah K. Wiant Law Librarianship Award Applications are now open for the Sarah K. Wiant Law Librarianship Award. Incoming or continuing master’s students with a concentration in Law Librarianship and Legal Informatics are strongly encouraged to apply. This award is $1,000 for Spring 2019 semester. This award is not eligible for in-state tuition. Applications will remain open until Dec. 5, 2018. Sarah K. Wiant is an alum of the Masters of Library Science program at University of North Texas. Dr. Wiant is a Professor of Law Emerita at Washington and Lee University and has formerly served as Director of the Law Library. Along with her impressive experience at Washington and Lee University, she has served on the American Association of Law Librarian board for many years. Her area of expertise includes Copyright Law, Intellectual Property, Trademarks, Unfair Competition, and Admiralty Maritime Law. Requirements:

  • Masters of Science in Library Science student with a concentration in Law Librarianship and Legal Informatics.
  • 3.5 GPA requirement
  • Students must be enrolled in at least 6 hours for the spring semester
