Expenses
Students should expect to spend $800 for books, study materials and supplies during an exchange year.
Travel within the U.S. will require additional funding.
We recommend arriving with $1,000 in traveler's checks as they can be replaced if lost or stolen. Additional monies may be brought in via bank draft or personal check to be deposited into a new bank account. Wells Fargo has a branch conveniently located on campus.
Exchange students may work up to 20 hours per week on campus.
Meals
On-campus living includes both housing and dining. 5 or 7 day meal plan options are available. UNT is proud to boast an all vegan cafeteria in Maple Hall. Vegetarians will also find plenty of options available in Bruce Dining Hall.
Wardrobe
Plan on wearing very light clothing upon arrival in Texas in August. Summer daily temperature is between 95 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit (35-38 Celsius). Shorts, t-shirts, sandals, and sunglasses are essential. Good walking shoes are a must as you will walk a lot on campus.
Sending Mail and Receiving Packages
Rent a post office box to receive mail in your name. Large packages and luggage may be shipped in advance to the Study Abroad Office street address. Students usually travel with essentials and buy items here as needed.
Travel Within the United States
Wintermester and Spring Break are a great time to travel. Some exchange students travel within the United States while others return home. To stay on campus during these vacation periods, please make special arrangements with your dorm.
Working in Texas During Your Stay
Exchange students may work on campus at UNT. Exchange students may not work off campus.
Campus positions pay about $7.25 per hour. You may work up to 20 hours per week.
The Student Employment Office will help you find a position on campus.
