Mean Green Down Marshall In Straight Sets

DENTON - With legends of Mean Green Volleyball past in attendance, North Texas rolled past Marshall in straight sets (25-21, 25-15, 25-18) on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Jordyn Williams and sophomore Valerie Valerian tied for the team lead in kills with 11 each. Senior Karley York provided 38 assists while sophomore Barbara Teakell continued to show her importance after returning to the line-up with seven kills and 14 digs.

Head coach Andrew Palileo used the week, which featured just this one game, to prepare his team for the final stretch of conference play.

North Texas has now won three straight.

"We held our home court," Palileo said. "It's good because we are starting to string some wins together. We are going in a direction at this time of year that we are working for, and I think our girls are having a good time getting to that point."

Valerian and Williams were strong on offense for the Mean Green in the first two sets. Valerian had 12 total attacks in set one, four for kills. Williams had three kills on five attacks while both committed just one error.

It was more of the same in set two as Valerian attacked the ball 12 times for three kills. Teakell pitched in with a perfect four-for-four set, while adding a dig.

Williams felt good about her performance on Sunday coming off her Conference-USA Defensive Player of the Week selection.

"It got easier as the game progressed but their libero did a great job of digging it up," Williams said. "I had to be selective with my shots. This means a lot for our team. We are trying to get rolling. Having the whole week off was very good to get in the gym and practice hard."

Teakell came alive in set three with three kills on 10 attacks. She also added seven digs.It was an all-around offensive performance in the penultimate set for North Texas.

Valerian and Williams both notched four kills, while Teakell added three. Teakell was active for North Texas with 10 attacks in the third set.

Valerian's performance was close to a double-double, as she has had a solid stretch of matches in the last couple weeks. She was happy to perform like this in-front of the alumni who made it into town.

"It was so nice to see everybody I missed them," Valerian said. "We have had good energy the last couple weeks. Volleyball is a game of momentum, and we have to stay focused on keeping this energy."
