Mean Green Outlast Blazers In Five Sets

BIRMINGHAM, AL. - Sophomores Valerie Valerian and Barbara Teakell each recorded a double-double as the North Texas volleyball team finished off a perfect weekend road trip beating UAB 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-20, 15-8).

Valerian's team-highs in kills (20) and digs (17) were good enough for her 11th double-double of the season. Teakell tied her season high in digs with 16 and also tallied 10 kills to notch her third this season.

North Texas (10-15, 6-3 C-USA) dropped set one as UAB (11-12, 3-6 C-USA) used a couple of runs and made the most of some Mean Green mistakes to win the hard fought set to start off the match. UNT's 6 attack errors and 3 service errors cost them 9 points, which at the end of the set would prove to be too important in this hard fought conference match.

The second set was a different story for the Mean Green. While the Blazers committed six attack errors of their own in the second frame, the Mean Green's attacking was the highlight of the set. Senior Karley York recorded 13 of her team high 55 assists in the second frame, with the Mean Green hitting at a .500 clip.

Four of Valerian's kills came in the third set which saw the Blazers make a late run to erase a fie point Mean Green lead (16-11) to tie the set up at 23 after some back and forth volleyball. Valerian would eventually end the set with her 11th kill of the day to secure the 26-24 win and a 2-1 lead in the match for the Mean Green.

Freshman Rhett Robinson shifted from her defensive focus to more of an offensive attack with 19 kills of her own. Four of them came in the fourth set which saw the Blazers claim a 25-20 win, forcing a decisive fifth set.

The Mean Green had grown to a 9-7 advantage in the set before taking a timeout. The Mean Green would come out of the break and go on a 7-1 run to end the shortened set with a 15-8 win, sealing the victory for the Mean Green.
