Shaffer Posts School Record In Shot Put

NORMAN, Okla. – Jaleisa Shaffer set a school record in the shot put, while Lyric Choice and Brock Hottel each earned first place honors for North Texas track and field Saturday at the J.D. Martin Invitational hosted by Oklahoma inside Mosier Indoor Facility.

Shaffer's mark of 14.65 meters garnered her fourth place and broke the record set by Stacy Orakpo in 2005 of 14.50. Choice ran a 25.28 in the 200-meter dash, and Hottel posted a mark of five meters in the pole vault.

"I'm really excited about how we have competed this indoor season. We have broken school records in 3/4 of the meets we've competed in," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "Our men's pole vaulting quartet ranks in the top 25 in the country, top five in Texas and number one in Conference USA. Hottel led the way by winning his second meet of the season, followed by personal best performances by Jacob Franks and Cody Bullard."

Sarah White advanced to the finals of the 60-meter dash and finished sixth in a time of 7.62 seconds. Jaelon Jackson also made his way to the finals in the 60m and notched sixth place in 6.95 seconds. Choice had a solid performance in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.71 seconds for third place.

"I feel really good about how our team has been approaching competition. Our confidence in what we're doing day-to-day is paying off on the weekend. We have about 10 days to rest, recover and prepare for the Conference USA Championships," Sheffield said.

The Mean Green travel to Birmingham Feb. 16-17 for the championships.
