BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jaleisa Shaffer improved upon her own North Texas school record in shot put, and the 4x400 meter relay team of Lauryn McCollum, Artesha Richardson, Lyric Choice and Aneesa Scott broke a 12-year old record on the final day of the 2019 Air Force Reserve Indoor Track & Field Championships Sunday hosted by UAB inside Birmingham Crossplex.
 
Shaffer, who garnered fourth place, upped her mark to 14.82 meters where she previously set the UNT record at 14.65 on Feb. 2. The 4x400 relay squad ran a 3:44.03 to eclipse the prior time of 3:44.16 to also earn fourth place honors.
 
"On this stage we still had several athletes improve their personal as well as season's best performances," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "Although our expectations are to contend for a conference championship, I'm still really excited about our future."
 
Darien Porter was the high finisher on the day for the Mean Green by running the 60-meter dash in 6.79 seconds. Alia Holmes concluded in third in the 200 in 24.00 seconds and also took home seventh in the 60 meters with a time of 7.63. Florian Lussy clocked in at 8:21.40 in the 3,000-meter run for third place.
 
In pole vault, Sydney Salinas finished in fourth place with a mark of 3.76 meters, while Mary Piercy vaulted 3.61 for the eighth spot. Joseph Squire ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.10 seconds for fifth place, and Andrew Cobos grabbed sixth in the mile with a time of 4:13.70. The men's 4x400 team consisting of Squire, Yannick Kalidas, Davonye Jones and James Cole clocked a season-best time of 3:19.85 for an eighth-place finish.
 
"We can be much improved outdoors. They are learning how to compete at a high level, so the points will come. We've built our outdoor season to build their confidence and give them experience in competing against greater competition," Sheffield said.
 
The Mean Green begin their outdoor season at Abilene Christian March 14-15.
