Holmes Breaks UNT Record In 200-Meter Dash

LUBBOCK – Alia Holmes placed her name in the North Texas record books by running the 200-meter dash in 23.81 seconds Saturday at the Texas Tech Classic inside the Sports Performance Center.

Holmes, a sophomore transfer, garnered seventh place and set the record in her third meet as a member of the Mean Green, improving upon the 24.01 ran by Alysha Adams during the 2010 season. Director of track and field Carl Sheffield said, "To set new school records says a lot about the future of our young team."

"It was a great weekend for our team. I'm really happy with our experience as several athletes claimed personal best marks. We put up a lot of marks in the top 12 of the performance list," Sheffield said.

Florian Lussy took top honors in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:33.18, as Jack Beaumont ran an 8:45.54 for third, and Matthew Morgan came in at 8:51.34 for eighth.

Jaleisa Shaffer and Haley Walker each threw personal bests in shot put with Shaffer placing third in the "B" division with a throw of 13.86 meters, and Walker producing a mark of 13.40 for ninth place in the first division.

Other top finishes included Tim Jones in the mile with a time of 4:18.45 for fourth place, and Rea Iseli came in sixth in the 3,000-meters at 10:21.62.

"This weekend really lets us know where we are with our preparation for Conference USA. This helps us gauge our potential of putting scorers into the finals of the championships," Sheffield said.

The Mean Green travel to the J.D. Martin Invitational hosted by Oklahoma Feb. 2.
