Mean Green Shutout LA Tech

DENTON – The North Texas tennis team got back to its winning ways with another shutout performance on Sunday afternoon.

The Mean Green (9-6) beat Louisiana Tech (3-9) 7-0.

It is their sixth shutout win this season. They only had one shutout win last year. Sunday's win also ties the Mean Green's win total from a season ago.

The match featured a straight set singles victory by junior Haruka Sasaki.

"I'm so happy with how we dominated at each court today," Sasaki said. "After the tough loss against Old Dominion (on Friday), we came back with the right attitude and put lots of extra work in as a team. We're so hungry to win and get the things done this year. I really believe that this is the year we will make history."

Sunday was Sasaki's first singles win of the spring season in what was her fourth singles appearance of the year. Sasaki was inserted in the lineup at No. 6 spot.

"I'm so happy to get the opportunity to play and help the team win," Sasaki said. "This season is not easy for me mentally but I just want to help my team who I love the most and hope to be successful in any way I can. I'll continue to give my best in every practice and am willing to push myself as well as my teammates."

Along with Sasaki, Ivana Babic improved to 9-1 on the year with a straight set victory on Sunday to continue her breakout season. Maria Kononova won in straight sets as well over LA Tech and has now won nine singles matches in a row, which ties her personal best from the 2017 season.

Fellow senior Tamuna Kutubidze also won in straight sets on Sunday and improved to 11-1 on the year. She has won seven in a row.

After losing on Friday versus No. 24 ODU, UNT's Minying Liang and Nidhi Surapaneni bounced back with wins. Liang won in dominating fashion with a 6-1, 6-1 win on Sunday. Surapaneni picked up the Mean Green's seventh singles win on Sunday with a grueling long three-set win at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Surapaneni had to grind out a 12-10 third set win.

In doubles on Sunday, the Mean Green's top doubles team went unfinished but Alexandra Heczey, Babic, Liang and Surapaneni picked up the wins. For Heczey and Babic, it's their seventh doubles win of the year, which Is tied for the team lead with Kononova and Kutubidze.
