North Texas Heads To UNLV Invite

LAS VEGAS — The Mean Green tennis team is on their way to Las Vegas to compete in the UNLV Invite to conclude the fall season.

This will be the Mean Green's final competition before their Jan. 15 dual match season-opener against Abilene Christian in Denton.

"We will look to finish our fall campaign in strong fashion," said associate head coach Jeff Hammond who is traveling with the team while the team is split between the UNLV open and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Nationals. "We have gotten better since August and now we hope that the results this weekend will reveal this."

North Texas is competing against eight other schools in the UNLV Invite: Iowa, Arizona, Texas Tech, Purdue, Liberty, Texas A&M UNLV and Air Force. UNT is scheduled to face Iowa and Arizona in the spring.

Liberty is coached by former Mean Green associate head coach Jeff Maren who served under Sujay Lama for six seasons and helped UNT go from a two-win team to a 13-win team to eventually winning Sun Belt Conference championships in 2010 and 2012.

The Mean Green have shown incredible growth this fall, from the top of its lineup to the less experienced.

In the whole team's last competition, the ITA Texas Regionals, every one had collegiate-best moments that showed UNT is one of the best teams in the region and in Conference USA.

From Ivana Babic and Alexandra Heczey beating the top ranked doubles team in the region to Minying Liang in singles slaying nationally ranked competition.

North Texas hopes to take its level of play to an even higher point before it goes into the two month break.

Competition at the UNLV invite begins Friday and runs through Sunday.
