Tranberg Has Mammoth Weekend

DALLAS — Mean Green tennis sophomore Sille Tranberg had a mammoth of a weekend at SMU's Red and Blue Challenge that included two big wins and a grueling of a win on Sunday.

The Denmark native defeated two Mustang opponents in route to what has been one of her best finishes of her young UNT career. Tranberg opened the round robin event with a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 win over Emma Pieroni and then later a tremendous comeback nail-biter win over SMU's Katherine Jakeway, 7-5, 6-7(6), 12-10.

"Sille had an excellent weekend," said associate head coach Jeff Hammond. "She had a roller coaster of a match on Sunday, in which she prevailed. In the end, she had a tremendous approach after a disappointing middle set."

In the second-set of her Sunday match, Tranberg came all the way back from a 5-1 deficit, saved five set points, only to eventual drop the set in a tiebreak.

Despite all that, Tranberg put that behind her and battled in the final third-set 10-point tiebreak with Jakeway and won by the slimmest of margins. It was so close that Tranberg and Jakeway had to go beyond the 10 points in order to determine a winner as Tranberg prevailed, 12-10.

"She showed that she has the mental capacity to perform and to win when a lot is on the line," Hammond said. "I'm really proud of her."

Tranberg and her Mean Green teammates will hit the road next week as they travel to Las Vegas to compete in the UNLV Invite. Seniors Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze will be in Arizona at the National Fall Championship.
