Softball Defeats UTA, Falls to #18 Texas Tech

LUBBOCK – The Mean Green picked up a win to start Saturday before splitting the doubleheader in the final day of the Texas Tech Invitational. The Mean Green (11-8) defeated UT – Arlington in the final game of the three-game series in 2019 between the two.

The Mean Green fell to hosts #18 Texas Tech to round out the weekend.

"I think performance wise [this weekend] was pretty average," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "Effort was better today. I felt like UTA didn't outplay us like they did the first time we played, so that was a positive. But it was a pretty average weekend."

North Texas scored 14 runs across the two days.

Hope Trautwein was lights out. She went the distance, allowing just one earned run in the first before shutting down the Mavs (10-8). She allowed just four hits in her work.

"Hope threw a great game against a good line up that had success against us the previous two games," DeLong said. "She was key today in us having a chance, she came up big on a short turnaround."

The Mean Green answered UTA's first inning run with a run in the second. Lacy Gregory reached on an error with the bases loaded that brought home Kenzie Young. In the fifth Tayla Evans continued her strong week, with a long two-run home run to left, her third of the week and season to put North Texas up 3-1.

Evans went 2-for-3 with 2RBI. Katie Clark singled home Hanna Gerecke and Young to reach the final score. That was Clark's lone hit in the ballgame as she went 1-for-3 with 2RBI.

Four runs for the Red Raiders in the second set the tone for the final game against Texas Tech (16-1). Bailey Tindell pitched all six-innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out four. The Red Raiders amassed 16 hits.

"We're going to need innings out of our bullpen in conference play," DeLong said. "Bailey really competed today. It was good to extend her. She gave up some hits, but there were some plays out there where if we make a play or two, it's a closer ballgame. I was really pleased with Bailey's effort today. We're thinking long-term."

The Red Raiders followed up four runs with another in the fourth ti push the lead to 5-0. North Texas cut into Texas Tech's lead in the fifth inning with a sac fly from Hannah Gerecke that scored Rhylie Makawe. Gregory and Young both went 1-for-3, having North Texas' two hits.

"We're excited to get back home," DeLong said. "These last couple weeks have been mentally tough on us. We'll take a couple days, and get back with a good full week of practice. We can't wait, I'm ready to be back home and start this next portion of the schedule."

The Mean Green open Conference Play against Southern Miss on March 9 against with a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
