Softball Falls To Southern Miss 7-3 In Finale

DENTON - North Texas softball won its opening conference series, but could not complete the sweep falling to Southern Miss 7-3 in the series finale Sunday. The Mean Green (13-9, 2-1) struggled against the Golden Eagles' (11-10, 1-2) ace Abby Trahan who pitched a complete game allowing just three runs on five hits while striking out seven.

"She's probably one of the better pitchers in our league," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "I knew we would see her two out of the three games and it would be tough to beat her twice. We beat her once in come-from-behind fashion. We could have easily been 1-2. [Southern Miss] is going to take some wins from people."

Three runs in the first got Southern Miss out front. The Golden Eagles added another with a solo home run in the fifth, the second solo homer of the day for Southern Miss. All of North Texas' runs came in the fifth inning. Lacy Gregory reached on an error with the bases loaded scoring Kenzie Young. Then Tayla Evans reached on another error at first scoring Gregory and Katie Clark. Evans went 0-for-4 officially, but led the team with 2RBI.

Bailey Tindell was on the hook for Southern Miss' three runs before Hope Trautwein took over. Trautwein blazed through the opposition line-up before she was tagged for the four runs she gave up. Tindell went one inning, allowing three runs on three hits all earned striking out one. Trautwein went six innings allowing four runs and striking out four.

North Texas now prepares for the second mid-week game of the season.

"We'll rest and have a good Tuesday at practice," DeLong said. "We'll do what we do on Wednesday."
