MGSB Defeats #20 Texas A&M, Splits Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLLEGE STATION, Texas – North Texas softball split a Saturday double-header in day two of the Aggie Classic, defeating #20 Texas A&M in run rule fashion 10-2. The Mean Green (3-1) fell in extras against California Baptist in the nightcap 6-5.

It is the first Mean Green win over a Top 25 opponent since 2016. (February 21, #21 Baylor).

The Mean Green jumped on the Aggies (3-1) for 10 runs on seven hits, stranding just four runners. Against the Lancers (1-3), North Texas stranded 18 runners, and despite a late rally and 13 hits could not prevent Cal Baptist from turning the tables from day one, and walking off.

"We belong," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We've just got to be more consistent. That's where we struggle right now in just being consistent."

The front half of the Mean Green line-up came up big. Hitters one through three in the line-up combined for six RBI. Katie Clark drove home two runs going 2-for-4. Harley Perella drove home three on 2-for-4 hitting out of the two hole. Lacy Gregory added an RBI herself.

Hanna Rebar provided the rest, as she went 1-for-2 at the dish driving home four runs. Rebar provided the first home-run of the 2019 season when she hit a 3-run shot to dead-center.

All of North Texas' runs came in the second and third innings.

"I'm not surprised," DeLong said. "I'm surprised maybe that we scored that many runs. We played really well. We really put it together. We scored runs, won some tough at-bats. That's the time of team we can be."

It was a clean game on the defensive end with no errors committed. Jenna Goodrich got the start, allowing just two hits, no runs and no walks in 3 1/3 innings. Hope Trautwein finished out the ballgame in relief, allowing the only two runs for A&M in the 5th inning. Trautwein allowed three hits, one earned run while walking one and striking one out.

Goodrich got the win, her first in a North Texas uniform.

North Texas 5, Cal Baptist 6 (9)

After playing 12 innings against each other on Friday, the Lancers and Mean Green decided seven would not be enough yet again.

The Lancers jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first and second before finding two more runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Bailey Tindell got her first start, allowing six hits and four runs in 3.0 innings of work. She walked none of the 16 batters she faced.

Goodrich stepped in for the rest of the ballgame finishing the final 5 2/3 allowing one hit, two runs, one earned and walking two while striking out three.

The Mean Green rallied late, scoring two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Tayla Evans came up with a two-run pinch hit single in the fifth, before Gregory drove home a run in the sixth. The Mean Green loaded the bases eventually, and Kenzie Young drew a walk to force the tying run home.

The Lancers retook the lead in the bottom half of the sixth, before Gregory drove home another run to tie the game at five in the seventh. She finished 3-for-5 at the plate against CBU. A pass ball in the 9th allowed the winning run to score as the Lancers won in walk off fashion.

"We had 18 runners left on base, it's hard to beat people when you play like that," DeLong said. "We've still got a ways to go. I think we're going to play better softball. We fought after getting behind. We could have easily given up. Effort is what we want."

The Mean Green return for a 10 a.m. match-up with Northern Colorado to round out tournament play in the Aggie Classic on Sunday.
