UNT Sweeps Mean Green Classic, Wins Fifth Straight

The North Texas softball team completed a perfect weekend at home, and improved to 8-1 on the season with a 6-0 win over Northwestern State on Sunday afternoon.

The win capped a perfect 4-0 record for North Texas in the 2019 Mean Green Classic.

"It's great, anytime you go 4-0 on a weekend it's a great weekend," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "The kids played hard all weekend and that's all we can ask."

The Mean Green accounted for nine hits in Sunday's game, bringing their weekend total to 45.

"Definitely a good weekend for the bats, but we're a good hitting team," DeLong said. "We faced some good pitching this weekend, faced good pitching last weekend. This group can hit and if we continue to work were going to be a good offensive team moving forward."

The offense during Sunday's game was paced by junior Katie Clark who turned a 3-for-4 game on Sunday. Clark also had three RBI's, two coming on her big two-out double in the five-run fourth inning to give the Mean Green a 3-0 advantage.

"Right now everybody's kind of hitting well, you have to choose who you want to pitch to," Clark said.

2,566 spectators were on hand throughout the eight-game weekend slate, a crowd that provided big energy and got a great on-field product in return.

"We had great turnout with the crowd. I hope that continues to grow, we want to put on a show," DeLong said. "When we play we want people to enjoy their time out here and I hope they did it and I hope more people come moving forward."

"It feels amazing to come out a do that at home. There were some good teams we were playing and I'm really proud of how everyone came out," Clark said. "We had a lot of energy all weekend long and just kind of crushed it and it was cool."

The first three innings of the game started as a pitchers duel with junior Jenna Goodrich drawing the start for the Mean Green and Mikayla Brown drawing the start for the Demons (2-6).

Northwestern State threatened in the first with runners at first and third and only one away. But Goodrich was able to induce an pop fly and get a huge strikeout to end the threat.

Offense would not come from either team until the third inning when a Clark single would plate freshman Tayla Evans, giving the Mean Green a 1-0 advantage.

Sophomore Hope Trautwein would make her third appearance of the tournament when she took the circle in the fourth inning. Trautwein would not surrender a hit and only walk one batter amidst four strikeouts, earning her fourth victory of the season.

"Hope is solid, she's our one and she did what we need her to do. She got into a really good rhythm today and yesterday," DeLong said. "She's sharp right now, we've just got to keep her healthy and keep going."

The Mean Green bats would come alive in the fifth accounting for five runs. All coming with two outs on the board. Clark would start it off with a double to the left-center gap, plating juniors Kenzie Young and Jenna Goodrich.

Senior Harley Perella would plate Clark with a single to center, and junior Hanna Rebar would plate Perella after a two-out single by junior Lacy Gregory.

Trautwein would be efficient the rest of the way, surrendering just two base runners the final three frames giving North Texas its fifth straight victory.
