Mean Green Record 24 Hits, Sweep Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENTON – The bats remained hot as the North Texas softball team collected 24 hits to sweep Saturday's doubleheader in the Mean Green Classic.

North Texas (7-1) defeated Seton Hall (4-4) 14-2 and Creighton (3-5) 7-3.

"We swung the bat really well," Head Coach Rodney DeLong said. "If we continue to play with that kind of energy and swing the bat that well it'll be good for us."

The offense of the day was paced by junior Hanna Rebar who went 3-for-5 in the two games including a home run in each game, giving her the team lead with four and major confidence.

"It's easy to have confidence when everybody on the team has whole faith in you," Rebar said. "I think everybody has faith in me at the bat and I have complete trust in them so it's easy to feed off of."

The Mean Green offense would account for six home runs on the day, four in the first game and two in the second. One by junior Lacy Gregory, senior Rhylie Makawe, junior transfer Jenna Goodrich, junior Katie Clark and the two by Rebar.

North Texas 14, Seton Hall 2

The Mean Green wasted no time scoring in game one, accounting for seven runs on eight hits in the first frame.

Gregory would get the scoring started following up back-to-back hits from Katie Clark and senior Harley Perella, driving in Clark with a single and setting up runners at second and third for Rebar.

Hanna would continue the onslaught with her first homer of the day, a three-run shot to left field putting the Mean Green up by four with nobody out. But they were just getting started.

Makawe would follow up Rebar's shot with a homer of her own to left field, followed by RBI singles from junior Nicole Ochotnicki and Katie Clark.

However, the offense would not outshine the pitching from the Mean Green. Sophomore Hope Trautwein would draw the start and would impress. Surrendering only one hit in four innings of work and recording six strikeouts.

"It's so easy to throw with our offense in the dugout and hitting," Trautwein said. "It makes my job so much easier. All the stress is lifted off of me and I know I can just throw."

The Mean Green would add two runs in the second frame. The first coming on a sac-fly from Goodrich, followed up by an RBI single from freshman Tayla Evans.

The third inning would see five more Mean Green runs cross home plate. The scoring in the frame was started with a three-run home run by Gregory, followed by a two-run moonshot by Goodrich. The ball would be sent over the scoreboard in left center field giving the Mean Green a 14-0 lead.

North Texas only had three run-rule victories in the entirety of the 2018 season.

Game two of the doubleheader would see the Mean Green falling behind in the first inning for only the third time this season. Creighton's Kelli Finan sent a towering shot over the left field wall for a three-run shot, and a 3-0 early lead for the Blue Jays.

The Mean Green would counter in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own.  The first courtesy of an RBI single from Gregory after a one-out double by Perella. A single by Young would plate the second run of the inning and draw the deficit to just one.

Creighton would threaten again in the second by loading the bases with just one away, but the Mean Green would avoid more damage.

Goodrich would induce a ground ball to Makawe at second who would tag a runner and throw onto first for the double play, getting the Mean Green off the field and back to the plate.

Katie Clark would start off the four-run second inning with her first home run of the year, an opposite field shot to left field.

North Texas would take the lead after Gregory blooped a ball to right, plating Perella after her two-out triple. Rebar would step to the dish and connect on her second home run of the day, an opposite field shot of her own giving North Texas the 6-3 advantage.

Rebar would finish the day with five RBIs, while Gregory paced the team with six.

Trautwein would enter the circle in the second game to start the third inning, and would limit Creighton to just two base runners the remainder of the game. Both coming off errors. Trautwein would record five strikeouts in game two, bringing her season total to 42.

The scoring would end for North Texas when Clark would beat out a bases loaded infield single., plating Young.

Trautwein would come out to shut down Creighton in the seventh and seal their seventh victory of the season.
