Peters' Short-Handed Goal Wins It For UNT

DENTON — The North Texas soccer team's Berklee Peters kept the Mean Green's winning streak going with a short-handed chip over the Rice Owls' goalie's head in the 74th minute to win the match 1-0 Friday night at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.

In a classic grueling North Texas versus Rice match, Friday night featured a total of 25 shots with 23 fouls, four yellow cards and the Mean Green's Taylor Torres, who leads the team in goals and assists, being sent off in the 63rd minute of what was a 0-0 match.

But despite being short-handed, following Torres' dismissal, North Texas seemed to steal the momentum from the Conference USA preseason favorite.

And it was led by Peters.

Following her fellow forward's red card and leading up to her eventual game-winner, Peters noticeably chased down every ball and hustled for every opportunity she could get.

In the 74th minute, that chance came when she caught the Owls' goalie coming off her line on a through ball from Mean Green midfielder Elle Marie DeFrain and with one touch, Peters chipped the ball square into the back of the middle of the net.

"I didn't think it was going in," Peters said of her shot. "I'm tired but I knew we could do it."

The Mean Green's (8-1-1, 3-0) win over Rice (3-7, 1-3) extends their winning-streak to six in a row and their shutout-streak to four in a row. It's their longest shutout streak since they held five-consecutive teams to zero goals in 2015 — that team won the C-USA regular season and postseason title.

"It was an incredible game to be a part of and really both teams left everything out on the field," said head coach John Hedlund. "The momentum seemed to shift back and forth between us and Rice throughout the game and it really came down to which team was finally going to finish an opportunity in front of their goal, that's how close this game was throughout the night."

Rice had a couple opportunities thwarted by the crossbar but North Texas goalie Kelsey Brann (8-1-1) stopped the biggest of chances.

Brann made multiple diving saves and gutsy stops inside the box to maintain the shutout but late in the match, the Humble, Texas, native who entered Friday with the best save percentage (.906) in the nation for a freshman and the ninth-best overall, denied a Rice goal scoring opportunity when she attacked the streaking Owls' forward on a breakaway and risked her body by diving on the ball as the Rice player took a shot roughly 16 yards from the goal.

Following Peters' goal and in the final minutes, Rice again had a couple opportunities denied by the Mean Green defensive line. When they did control possessions, they managed to play keep away long enough to put the Owls in tough situations.

Friday's win comes on the heels of the Mean Green earning 29 top 25 votes and moving up to No. 2 the South Region.

UNT will look to extend their winning-streak to seven in a row on Sunday when they host UAB at 1:00 p.m. Due to her red card, Torres will not be active for Sunday's match.
