FORT MYERS, Fla. – The UNT women's golf team wrapped up their season on Wednesday at Verandah Golf Club in the final round of the Conference USA Championship and maintained its position in fourth place, tying last year's finish at the conference tournament.
 
The Mean Green were led by freshman Audrey Tan and junior Lauren Cox, who finished tied for sixth at 1-under par, but were led on the final day by Cox, who shot a 3-under-par 69 to climb nine spots on the leaderboard, thanks to four birdies. Her 69 was the second-best score posted in the final round. Freshman Patricia Sinolungan finished tied for 28th. The team shot an opening-round 287 before back-to-back 295s to finish the tournament.
 
"Overall, I'm pleased with our play this week," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "Obviously, our program is on the rise. With the addition of (signees) Marija (Jucmane) and Emilie (Ricaud), we should be contending for the title next year."
 
UNT also got an encouraging outing from sophomore Madison Lewis, who carded the second-most birdies on the day (three) and shot a 5-over 77 to count as the Mean Green's fourth score on the final day.
 
"We have been short-handed this spring," Akers said, referring to the fact his team has only had five on its roster for the past month and started the spring with six. "Lauren and Audrey had a great week. Madison helped us today, too, which was fun to see."
 
UT-San Antonio claimed the conference championship at 10-under par – 12 strokes clear of second-place Charlotte.
 
Now, Akers and Cox will play the waiting game and hope for an individual at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, which Akers said should be coming. Only one player previously received an individual bid to the NCAA tournament in program history (Randi Gauthier, 2003).
 
"Lauren should receive a bid to the NCAA tournament with her national ranking," he said.
