FORT MYERS, Fla. – The UNT women's golf team will enter the final round of the Conference USA Championships on Wednesday in a position to contend for a conference championship, as the Mean Green remained in fourth place after Tuesday's second round and sit at 6-over par.
For the second straight day, the Mean Green were led by freshman
Audrey Tan, who shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to move to 3-under for the tournament and to a tie for fourth place on the individual leaderboard after climbing as high as second earlier in the day.
Junior
Lauren Cox is tied for 15th at 2-over par and senior
Sabina Pena is tied for 18th at 3-over. Now, head coach
Michael Akers is hoping for big final rounds from that duo after they both finished in the top-5 at last year's conference championships.
"All I can ask for is to be in position to win going into the final round," Akers said. "We are in that position and look forward to going out tomorrow and trying to post a number."
North Texas is 10 shots back of leader Old Dominion, but Akers said it's nice to be in a new position for the recent history of the program.
"Overall, it is really cool that in two short years, we have gone from trying not to finish last at conference to trying to win," Akers said.
The Mean Green will tee off beginning at 7 a.m., Wednesday, and will be paired with fifth-place Marshall and sixth-place UTEP.
