UNT Moves Up On Final Day In Austin

AUSTIN – For the second straight day, the UNT women's golf team moved up the leaderboard in a loaded field at the UT Golf Club, as the Mean Green wrapped up play at the Betsy Rawls Invitational on Sunday with their best round of the tournament.

UNT shot a 9-over-par 297 to finish with a three-day total of 920 in 10th place. The nine teams that finished ahead of UNT were the nine top-50 teams in the field, including top-ranked Alabama, which finished sixth. No. 6 Texas won the tournament on its home course at 10-under par as one of two teams to finish the weekend under par.

For the second straight day, UNT was paced by its two upperclassman leaders, Lauren Cox and Sabina Pena.

"I am happy that we finished on a strong note today," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "Sabina and Lauren played great. Patty (Sinolungan) really finished strong with two birdies on her final three holes. This is a good sign. Having to take a 78 hurts, and we have seen this throughout the fall.

"When you play against the top teams in the nation, you have to be near perfect," Akers added. "We are looking for consistency throughout the lineup."

Cox finished at 9-over par in a tie for 26th place, while Pena shot 11-over par and finished tied for 34th, after both shot even-par 72 on Sunday.

UNT will wrap up its fall schedule at the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas on Oct. 29-30.

Akers said tournaments like the Betsy Rawls Invitational are a good test for his growing program and also a way to improve UNT's ranking.

"Those that understand college golf realize that losing to the No. 1 team in the country is much better than beating the 150th-ranked team," Akers said. "I am proud of our schedule, as it helps us strive to be the best."
