CARROLLTON, Texas — The first day of the inaugural Maridoe Intercollegiate could not have gone much better for the host Mean Green on Saturday.

UNT shot an opening-round 286 and will enter the second round of the tournament Sunday in first place at 6-over par, while senior Thomas Rosenmueller followed up his Trinity Forest Invitational individual crown last week by shooting a 2-under 68 to put himself in a three-way tie for the individual lead heading into Round 2 after six first-round birdies.

"Thomas played well, like a senior should," UNT coach Brad Stracke said. "It's what we expect out of him. The whole group played great today. I'm very proud of this group. They came out here relaxed and ready to go, and it was fun to watch."

Rosenmueller led the way for the Mean Green, as one of just four players in the field to go under par on Saturday, but the team had a solid performance from top to bottom, as Jordan Sanders shot a 2-over 72 to tie for 10th place after Round 1, and Lenny Bergsson and Kristof Ulenaers each shot 73 to put themselves in a tie for 15th.

Now, the Mean Green will try to maintain their lead on Sunday, when they'll tee off at 8:30 a.m., and look to continue taking advantage of their knowledge of the tough course at Maridoe Golf Club.

"This is what we expected with this tournament," Stracke said. "We know the course well and feel comfortable out there. The guys are having fun out there and enjoying the golf course. It's a very fair course. If you hit it in the fairway and below the hole, this course is for the taking. If you don't, it's going to penalize you."
