The UNT Speech and Hearing Center strives to provide diagnostic and treatment services in speech-language pathology and audiology while providing excellence in clinical education for students in the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at the University of North Texas.

Musicians who wish to be evaluated for voice or hearing problems will find highly trained audiologists and speech-language pathologists certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and licensed by the State of Texas.

Clinical services available to musicians in the area of medical speech pathology include comprehensive evaluation and treatment of voice disorders and vocal tract discomfort using a wide range of high-tech instruments. Strobolaryngoscopy, flexible nasoendoscopy, nasometry, spriometry, and acoustic analysis are utilized to assess structural integrity and function of the phonatory, resonance and articulatory systems that may be impaired as a result of music performing activities. Interdisciplinary treatment service is also available when any disorder of the vocal folds or the vocal tract is indicated. Conventional symptomatic therapy often is provided by licensed speech-language pathologists in conjunction to medical intervention and psychological counseling rendered by other health care professionals. At times, experimental evaluation and therapy trials are conducted as part of clinical research to explore better diagnostic tools and effective treatment approaches.

Audiologists at the UNT Speech and Hearing Center are available to evaluate musicians who have or feel that they are at risk for hearing loss. Clinicians have state-of-the-art equipment to perform routine and advanced diagnostic procedures to evaluate the entire auditory system including status of middle ear function and direct evaluation of inner ear status. Audiological services for musicians include:

• Complete evaluation of hearing sensitivity
• Evaluation of middle ear function
• Direct evaluation of inner ear function using otoacoustic emissions
• Custom musicians' ear protection
• Analog and digital hearing aids
• Counseling and education related to reducing the risk of hearing loss

Appointments, Billing, Directions

The UNT Speech and Hearing Center charges for services and accepts payment through cash, credit card, and insurance (for audiology service only). A sliding fee scale based upon income and number of dependents is available. Students at UNT are charged $25 for hearing services, but speech services are free. There will be a charge for custom ear protection at a reduced fee.

The Center, located at 907 West Sycamore Street on the campus of UNT, is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Appointments can be made by calling (940) 565-2262.
