Record-Tying 3’s Lead To Rout Of A&M-Commerce

DENTON – North Texas tied a program record with 19 3-pointers and eclipsed the century mark on the scoreboard for the first time in over a year in a 102-53 win over Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday night inside The Super Pit.

Six Mean Green hit at least two from deep as UNT (5-0, 0-0 C-USA) shot a blistering 56-percent in a 19-of-34 showing with Umoja Gibson compiling six from beyond the arc on his way to a game-high 22 points. Jorden Duffy totaled 19 points, Michael Miller tossed in a season-high 18, and Ryan Woodridge added 14 against the Lions (3-0, 0-0 LSC).

The three-point single game record was originally set Nov. 25, 1996, versus Mary-Hardin Baylor, and the last time UNT hit the 100-point mark occurred Nov. 10, 2017, against Eureka College.

"Once we had ball movement and a lot of paint touches, it opened it up," Head Coach Grant McCasland said. "It was a good effort early, and we were rolling offensively. Jorden gave us a huge lift."

Duffy scored on four of the first six UNT possessions, including a pair of threes and two shots in the lane for 10 quick points to push the Mean Green to a 13-2 lead.

DJ Draper entered the game and quickly drilled a three from the left baseline for a 24-11 UNT advantage at the 13:28 mark. Another Duffy trey handed the Mean Green a 20-point edge with 8:25 to go in the first half, and Zachary Simmons yanked down an offensive board for a putback along with a foul to make it 39-19.

A drive by Duffy through the lane doubled up the Lions at 44-22 with just over five minutes to go in the half. Woolridge sank a three from the top of the key as the Mean Green kept the Lions scoreless for the last 3:36 to take a 53-27 lead into halftime.

North Texas opened the second half by outscoring the Lions 16-7 in the first five minutes with the help of a trio of Gibson 3-pointers to increase the lead to 69-36. Mark Tikhonenko entered the scoring column with a three from the left wing while Shakeem Alcindor saw his first minutes of the season and quickly contributed an offensive board and putback to push the margin to 74-36.

The barrage of threes continued late into the contest as Draper and Miller each knocked down one and Tikhonenko hit two on his way to a career-high nine points for a 97-50 margin with under four minutes to play.

"Tikhonenko has a great feel. He's got the intangibles with his unbelievable passing ability, good vision, and good size," McCasland said.

The Mean Green take part in the Wolfpack Classic beginning with a game against Maryland Eastern Shore Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. in The Super Pit.
