Supervisory Building Blocks

The Supervisory Building Blocks certificate program is designed to strengthen and develop the skills of new and existing supervisors. Sessions address multiple aspects of supervision and provide attendees with an opportunity to learn collaboratively with supervisors from across the campus.

Supervisory Building Blocks sessions are currently in rotation at UNT, UNT Dallas, and UNT Health Science Center. System supervisors may sign-up and attend sessions at a location most convenient for them.

Team members who complete a total of 30 hours of training, including all foundation sessions and six (6) hours of elective sessions, will earn a certificate of achievement.​

Curriculum

Learning and development sessions will revolve around four key tracks:

1. Foundations of Supervision

2. Performance Management

3. Employee Relations

4. Operational Services

Participants will be required to complete all 12 foundation sessions:

  • Supervisor Communication Skills

Track: Performance Management

  • Art of Successful Coaching (UNT and UNT Dallas)
  • Facilitating Effective Performance Evaluations
  • Keys to Successful Coaching (UNTHSC)
  • Performance Management
  • Positive Approaches to Resolving Performance
    and Conduct Problems

Track: Employee Relations

  • Creating a Respectful Work Environment (UNTHSC and UNT Dallas)
  • Creating an Inclusive Work Environment (UNT)
  • Effective Documentation
  • Managing Leave and Attendance
  • Navigating ADA, FMLA, and Workers Compensation
  • Progressive Discipline

Track: Operational Services

  • Hiring Responsibilities

In addition, each participant must select and complete 6 hours of elective courses. Participants are encouraged to choose learning sessions that best pertain to their position and responsibilities. Participation beyond the minimum requirement is encouraged.

*Participants who have attended any of the foundation or elective sessions within nine (9) months of start date will receive credit and sessions will be applied toward a Certificate of Achievement. 

Who Should Attend

Any supervisor, manager or team leader who directly supervises team members and is responsible for the day-to-day operational and functional processes.

First-time supervisors and supervisors new to the UNT System are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible after assuming their responsibilities.

Attendance Requirements

Participants must complete the required 30 hours of training within 18-months after enrolling and attending their first session. ​​​

To enroll in the Supervisory Building Blocks program, complete the online application by clicking on the Sign Up button below and login using your EUID and password.  Once you have submitted your enrollment, you will be contacted within 48 hours with further instructions on registering for sessions.
