Our Mission

The Child Development Laboratory in the College of Education is a preschool program for young children using best practices based on established quality standards and research in the field. The program supports the education, training, development, and research efforts of UNT students and faculty while offering excellent learning experiences to the children of the families it serves.

Facts

The Child Development Laboratory is a laboratory preschool within the College of Education, with teacher training as the primary focus. Students in early childhood education, child development, play therapy, and related fields may observe child behaviors and teaching strategies. They may also participate within the classrooms under head teacher supervision.

Children from the university and wider community who are ages three to six are provided with developmentally appropriate cognitive and language, social and emotional, and physical experiences under the guidance of degreed early childhood teachers.

The program is fully licensed by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, accredited through the National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education Program (NAC), and is a designated vendor for Texas Workforce Solutions Child Care Services.

Hours of operation, following the university schedule are as follows:

Monday through Friday
Morning session 8 am - 12 noon
Supervised lunch 12 noon - 1 pm
Afternoon lession 1 pm - 5 pm

Children may be enrolled in either session, or both sessions in combination with the lunch session, with lunches brought from home. All children are enrolled for a 5-day week. A head teacher and a student assistant are employed in each classroom. Children are grouped developmentally (usually corresponding to their chronological age). The philosophy of education being used is based on early childhood development theory and best practices. The program is open during Fall, Spring, Summer I, and Summer II university sessions.
