Average Starting Salary to Class of 2011 Up 3.5 Percent

From NACE

BETHLEHEM, PA—For the first time since 2008, a college class is beginning the year with an average starting salary offer that is on the rise, according to results of a new survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

The overall average salary offer to a Class of 2011 bachelor’s degree graduate is $50,034, up 3.5 percent over last year at this time, according to NACE’s Winter 2011 Salary Survey report.

2010: The Year of the Bizarre Interview Question?

From Vault

Perhaps the stranger the interview question, the tougher the job market.

Unless companies are desperately trying to weed out as many applicants as possible, how else could one explain an interview question like “Explain to me what has happened in this country during the last 10 years”?

Is an internship the new entry-level job?

(CNN) -- Ani Kevork has interned at seven companies since she graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles in 2009. She's trying to get a full-time job, but there's just nothing out there.

"It wasn't really a choice," she said. "It's just the reality of the job market today."

No. 7 proved lucky for Kevork in that her current internship at a film studio in London is paid, unlike her six previous internships. Still, she has no benefits, no job security and no idea where she'll be in a few weeks.

Unemployment Rate Remains High Among Younger Grads

The current unemployment rate for bachelor’s degree holders over the age of 25 is just 4.5 percent—less than half the nationwide unemployment rate of 9.5 percent.

For the under-25 crowd, however, it’s a much different story.

Bachelor’s degree holders under the age of 25 have an unemployment rate of 11.7 percent—which itself is up from 10.1 percent in July 2009 and 8.3 percent in July 2008.
