Dr. Fuchs investigates why neurons and glia have a primary cilium. This solitary hairlike organelle acts as a sensory antenna, extending from a centriole (basal body) to detect signals that govern cell proliferation. Its function in postmitotic cells is less well understood. The lab works with mutant mice and cells in culture, to examine roles of cilia in (1) neural stem cells that use primary cilia to mediate signals for proliferation; (2) progenitors making the transition to newborn neurons; and (3) mature brains in various physiological states.
