Nader named interim vice provost for international affairs
DENTON (UNT) -Dr. Richard Nader has been appointed interim vice provost for international affairs at the University of North Texas effective July 1. A national search for a permanent vice provost for international affairs will begin this fall. Dr. Nader currently is director of research development in UNT's Office of Research and Economic Development. He will replace Dr. Earl F. Gibbons, who has accepted an appointment to serve as vice provost for Extended Education at Western Washington University. "Rick has been actively engaged in supporting international research development while at UNT," said Dr. Warren Burggren, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "He has a wealth of international experience that will serve us all well. During this appointment, Rick will provide important continuity and accomplish targeted short-term goals and he will bring international research development experience fully to bear in support of UNT's research aspirations." Nader has more than 20 years of experience in the administration of university international programs, has travelled extensively, and lived in Japan for three years, managing international recruiting and student affairs at Texas A&M's branch campus in Japan in the 90's. Nader served as director of the Institute for Pacific Asia at Texas A&M from 2000 to 2005 where he led projects funded by the U.S. Department of State, Department of Education and NSF. While at the Institute, he created new international alumni programs in Thailand, Japan and South Korea. While a program director at the National Science Foundation's Office of International Science and Engineering from 2005 to 2008, Nader managed a $12 million, 700-project China portfolio and funded international research and exchange grants designed to spur new collaborations. He supported senior NSF leadership with US-China cooperation, negotiated intergovernmental memoranda of understanding between the U.S. and China, Australia, Japan, Singapore and South Korea, and managed a flagship research abroad program sending more than 300 graduate students to seven countries in Asia and the Pacific-Rim to conduct joint research.
