UNT offers eight-week summer research program for undergraduates

What: Summer Undergraduate Program in Engineering Research, an eight-week summer program for undergraduate students to conduct research projects at the University of North Texas

When: June 6 (Monday) to July 29 (Friday)

Where: Discovery Park, located four miles north of the main campus in Denton, 3940 N. Elm St.

Cost: The program is free to participating students. Each participant will be provided with a stipend, on-campus room and board, if needed, and funds for travel expenses.

Deadline: Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation, a résumé and an official transcript, and complete the form available online by March 1 (Tuesday).

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas College of Engineering is offering free admission to qualified undergraduates to conduct research projects at the Summer Undergraduate Program in Engineering Research.

The SUPER Program will be held from June 6 (Monday) to July 29 (Friday), and is open to university students, including UNT students, who have completed at least two years of study in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or materials science and engineering.

The research program is free to participating students. Each participant will be provided with a stipend, on-campus room and board, if needed, and funds for travel expenses. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher at the end of the fall 2010 semester.  Students who will graduate at the end of the spring 2011 semester are not eligible for this program.

SUPER participants will have access to office space and all research facilities in Discovery Park, which is located at 3940 N. Elm St., four miles north of UNT's main campus in Denton. Discovery Park is the home of UNT College of Engineering and houses research laboratories for all the departments offering SUPER projects. UNT hosted the program for the first time last summer.

Students will be assigned a faculty mentor and can propose a research project of their own or choose to perform research under one of the college's research areas. Projects include:

  • Biomedical Heat Transfer
  • Computational Epidemiology
  • Computer Gaming
  • Computer Vision
  • Corrosion of Engineering Alloys
  • Metallic Materials, Polymers, Electronic Materials, Thin Films
  • Microwaves and Antennas
  • Monitoring of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
  • Multimedia Processing and Analysis
  • Nanotechnology and Nanomechanics
  • Natural Language Processing

"The SUPER program is a great opportunity for talented undergraduate students from UNT and other universities to perform unique research under the guidance and mentorship of UNT's engineering faculty using the state-of-the-art equipment at Discovery Park," said Dean of the College of Engineering Costas Tsatsoulis.
