UNT faculty member named Fulbright Scholar
DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Dr. Elizabeth Oldmixon, associate professor of political science at the University of North Texas, has received a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach in Ireland for the fall 2010 semester. The Fulbright Scholar Program sends more than 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year to lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program aims to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries. Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected for their academic or professional achievement and for demonstrating extraordinary leadership potential in their fields. Oldmixon will teach religion and U.S. politics at University College Cork. She will also conduct research on the influence of the Catholic Church on policymaking in Ireland. A UNT faculty member since 2002, Oldmixon teaches courses on the U.S. Congress, religion and politics, undergraduate research methods and Israeli politics. She is the author of "Uncompromising Positions: God, Sex and the U.S. House of Representatives." Her research has appeared in Foreign Policy Analysis, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly and the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, among other professional journals. In addition, she has contributed book chapters to Oxford Handbook on Religion and American Politics, Religion in World Politics and Representing Gold at the Statehouse: Religion and Politics in the American States. A former American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow, Oldmixon received the APSA's Paul J. Weber award for the Best Paper in Religion and Politics presented at the association's 2006 annual meeting. She was on the executive council and was chair of the APSA's Religion and Politics section, and currently serves on the editorial board of Politics and Religion. Oldmixon received her bachelor's degree from Providence College in Rhode Island and master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Florida.
