As Director of Research Compliance, Boyd Herndon is responsible for providing administrative support to the UNT faculty committees which review proposed research projects involving human subjects, live vertebrate animals, and financial conflicts of interest. Mr. Herndon is also the contact person for research-related questions about export controls.
Mr. Herndon is a graduate of the University of Texas School of Law, where he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. He is a former Instructor of Business Law at Stephen F. Austin State University, where he received his B.B.A. degree in General Business (Magna Cum Laude). Mr. Herndon joined UNT in 2002 after working for 22 years as a corporate attorney in Dallas for Southwestern Life, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, and Allianz Life. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas and received his Certified IRB Professional (CIP) designation in 2008.
While working in the life and health insurance industry, Mr. Herndon completed examinations to receive the following designations: Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU); Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC); Registered Health Underwriter (RHU); and Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI). Mr. Herndon taught the “Life and Health Insurance Law” course in the FLMI curriculum for 20 years.
Mr. Herndon is available for “IRB 101 On the Road” presentations to regular UNT classes and to academic departments. IRB 101 is designed for faculty members who will be submitting their first application to the UNT Institutional Review Board (IRB) for approval of a human subjects research study and graduate students who will be key personnel for the study. This presentation includes such topics as: what types of projects require IRB approval, informed consent, vulnerable subjects, and procedures for submitting applications to the UNT IRB.
