An introduction to the ISES program

About ISES

The UNT based Institute for Science and Engineering Simulation (ISES) is at the forefront of jet engine research and experimentation. ISES uses advanced characterization, simulation and modeling of aerospace components and materials to maintain and extend the life of aging U.S. Air Force aircraft, prevent catastrophic engine failure, and aid the Air Force in developing better materials for the next generation of aircraft.

UNT professors and researchers from materials science and engineering and chemistry share expertise and research findings with a team of international collaborators representing universities, industry, and government. Created in 2008, ISES receives financial support and direction from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Ohio.

Two existing and nationally recognized centers at UNT contribute to ISES: the Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART) and the Center for Advanced Scientific Computing and Modeling (CASCaM). The research is two-fold. An experimental part involves advanced characterization — a process of determining the structure and properties of a material using the unique, state-of-the-art facilities in CART. The modeling and simulation part uses CASCaM's diverse modeling expertise to explore mechanisms associated with failure of aircraft components.

“We combine cutting-edge modeling and simulation with world-class characterization skills and facilities," said Regents Professor of Chemistry, Tom Cundari, one of the professors working with ISES. "We're a one-stop shop for the Air Force."
